A trippy first-person action game

The Curse of the Wise Tree is a free action-adventure game that is played from a first-person perspective. The basic premise of the game sees you navigating a woodland area at night in search of mushrooms. However, all is not as it seems, as a variety of enemies lurk in the woods.

TCotWT lacks the refined graphics and gameplay of premium first-person games, like Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, as well as the artistic vision of a game like Samorost 3. However, it provides a short, snappy, and trippy adventure that will also make players laugh along the way.

Find mushrooms to progress

The gameplay loop for The Curse of the Wise Tree involves exploring the woods and finding mushrooms. A counter in the corner displays how many mushrooms the player has collected, and progress beyond checkpoint gates is locked until the player has amassed enough mushrooms to open each gate.

In essence, this makes mushrooms the key to progress within the game. However, progress will also be interrupted by the presence of some strange enemies that appear within the woods.

Defend yourself from meme-based enemies

The enemies that lurk within the woods in The Curse of the Wise Tree are evil spirits. However, the developer has opted to take a somewhat comedic approach to this by basing these spirits on various internet memes. Therefore, part of the fun of the game involves exploring and seeing which enemies appear.

The player must contend with the main enemy — a cursed tree. Along the way, the player will gain various combat tools, such as a cross that can fire projectiles, and the controls are easy to grasp. Often, it can be beneficial to run from enemies, and this helps to differentiate TCotWT from Call of Duty and other first-person games.

Plenty of laughs

The Curse of the Wise Tree is a fun, short adventure game that provides plenty of laughs along the way. The game is also visually pleasing, although some of the environmental pop-ins can become distracting.
